Call For Submissions: Tricky Eyes

Video Out Distribution in partnership with IFF-Animation are seeking short experimental animated works that challenge the conventions of the animated form.

‘Tricky Eyes’ asks artists to take inspiration from the ‘chase film’, which animation historian Norman M. Klein referred to as “the collision of improbables”. Popularizedby Tex Avery’s Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner series, the chase film relies on animating in a logically illogical way. Tricks used throughout chase films became a mechanism to expose the machinery of animation—a way for animators to show-off and hold the viewer's attention. How can these creative tricks be applied to contemporary animation practices?

With this in mind, Video Out invites submissions of experimental animation that disrupt or play with contrasting opposites, drawing a dark circle that becomes a hole to fall into.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • acceleration versus anticipation
  • action versus motivation
  • soft versus solid
  • catch and release
  • stretch and squash
  • pursuit followed by avoidance
  • Making the physically impossible possible

To submit:

please send a weblink of the work (Wetransfers not accepted), a short synopsis, and an artist bio to distribution@vivomediaarts.com. Digital (3D, 2D, hand-drawn, stop-motion, paper cutout, digitized film, etc.) submissions only, maximum two submissions per artist.

Send your submission with the subject: TrickyEyes_LastName by September 30th.
