Call for BIPOC Board Members – VIVO Media Arts Centre

With gratitude to our outgoing directors, VIVO Media Arts Centre seeks new members to join the Board of Directors for the 2024-2026 term. We are looking for a Treasurer, but we welcome general board member applicants.

We believe in a Board that reflects the diversity of our staff and the communities we serve. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuit, People of Colour, and/or 2SLGBTQIA+.

This volunteer opportunity is ideal for those interested in independent media arts, community resource-sharing, and artist-run cultures. Board members contribute approximately 5-8 hours per month, participating in online meetings and committee work, with the chance to support VIVO's mission through policy and decision-making.

What is VIVO?

Since 1973, VIVO Media Arts Centre has been a key player in supporting experimental media arts. We offer workshops, artist residencies, performances, exhibitions, and access to a significant media arts archive. Located on the stolen lands of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, VIVO is dedicated to fostering equitable access to media arts resources.

What is the role of a VIVO Board member?

  • advance the mission of the Satellite Video Exchange Society/VIVO Media Arts Centre
  • hold a fiduciary responsibility to the Society's members to comply with all legal requirements of a non-profit and charitable society
  • participate in Board Committees to conduct work, research and offer recommendations to the Board
  • contribute to the evaluation of Board composition and Committee work on an annual basis

How do I become a VIVO Board member?

  • Please complete the Application Form before midnight on Friday, October 11, 2024. We will not share your contact information.
  • Please send in an updated CV via the Application Form or call 604.872.8337 ext 1 if you prefer to communicate your experience verbally before midnight on October 11, 2024.
  • You are asked to be available for a 20 to 30-minute phone or video call between October 17 and 27th. During this call, we will contact shortlisted candidates to discuss any remaining details and inquiries we have regarding your nomination for the Board. It will also allow you to ask questions before the next board meeting and the onboarding process.

Who are we looking for?

VIVO seeks people with skills and experiences relevant to business/non-profit financial planning, law, fundraising, and Board secretarial duties. We welcome individuals with non-conventional and/or non-formal experiences. This means:

  • Your lived and living experiences and perspectives are valued.

Preferred Qualifications for Treasurer:

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the specific needs of arts organizations
  • Commitment to equity, anti-oppression, and social justice practices

Not sure if you qualify?

Apply anyway! You might be surprised by how relevant your experience is and how valuable your perspective is!

VIVO values the contributions of members of marginalized and underrepresented communities to our organization. We encourage applications from individuals who identify among or belong to communities of Indigenous people, Black people, people of colour, people with disabilities, 2SLGBTQI+ non-binary/gender non-conforming people, women, formerly incarcerated or institutionalized people, and migrant and working-class people.
